Jewish Hospital receives Commendation Award from Commission on Cancer;

For Immediate Release: 11/14/2006

(Louisville, KY) – The Commission on Cancer (CoC) of the American College of Surgeons has granted Jewish Hospital Three-Year Approval with Commendations for their Cancer Program.  In addition, Jewish Hospital & St. Mary’s HealthCare opened a Lung Cancer Program multidisciplinary.

The award recognizes the significant commitment by the administration, staff and physicians for providing high quality cancer care to Jewish Hospital patients and in exceeding the standards set by the CoC Approvals Program.  In addition to meeting the basic standards of the CoC Approvals Program, Jewish Hospital also excelled in a number of areas including outcome analysis, quality of National Cancer Data Base data submission, clinical trials accrual, prevention and early detection.

“This recognition is a wonderful testament to the care that our medical staff and team members provide to our patients each day,” said Tim Jarm, president/CEO of Jewish Hospital.  “Our goal, as a leading regional referral center, is to expand cancer treatment services to the community and this award certainly reinforces our commitment.”

November is lung cancer awareness month and Jewish Hospital and St. Mary’s HealthCare performs the highest volume of lung cancer surgeries in the region.  The Lung Cancer Program coordinates the delivery of services for patients with lung cancer, esophageal cancer and other thoracic malignancies.  The program has opened a multidisciplinary clinic this month to better service lung cancer patients.  Physicians are actively involved with clinical research and clinical trial development in thoracic oncology, bringing patients opportunities for medical treatments that may not otherwise be available to them.
