LOUISVILLE’S GASLIN TO RECEIVE NEW YORK TIMES JOB MARKET “TRIBUTE TO NURSES” AWARD

For Immediate Release: 11/9/2006

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Tracey Gaslin, RN, MSN., CRNI, CPNP will be the first nurse educator to receive the New York Times Job Market “Tribute to Nurses” Award for 2006.  She will be one of four nurses honored for outstanding patient care and excellence in nursing education at a Nov. 17 reception in New York.
Gaslin is an assistant professor at the University of Louisville School of Nursing, physician liaison for the Visiting Nurses Association-Nazareth, and pediatric nurse practitioner with Brownsboro Park Pediatrics. She was nominated by Lisa Long, a nursing student.

"I am truly humbled and honored to receive this award.  God has blessed me with so many educational opportunities and a wonderful network of family support and peer mentors who encourage me along the way.  I hope this award encourages all nurses to pursue their dreams and realize that they can accomplish whatever task is before them," said Gaslin.

Gaslin’s academic research focuses on issues faced by children with hemophilia, cancer and other diseases requiring infusion therapy.  She teaches nursing students in a variety of settings including working with victims of natural disasters, such as Hurricane Katrina, and summer camps for children with hemophilia and cancer.  She also has worked with U of L’s International Pediatrics Program, a partnership with Humana Foundation where she travels to Romania and brings current knowledge in pediatrics to physicians and nurses.

"Ultimately, her passion is service to the profession and the larger society,” said Long.

“She is an individual with great initiative, attentiveness, and passion for what she does each and every day.  She is full of laughter, life, and fun – the essence of professional nursing with a twist of contagious laughter.”

In her role at VNA-Nazareth, Gaslin is a physician liaison for pediatric home infusion services, coordinating nursing, pharmacy and medical equipment in the home environment to ensure the best care and quality of life for patients.

"Tracey is a great nurse and educator," said Mark Milburn, director of VNA Nazareth Home Care Infusion.  "She continuously keeps us up-to-date on the many of the latest technologies in nursing care."

The award winners will be featured in a special advertising section in The New York Times Magazine on Sunday, Nov. 19 that will reach 6.34 million print and digital readers nationwide.

The New York Times Job Market “Tribute to Nurses” awards recognize nurses who are nominated by their patients and colleagues.  This year more than 500 award nominations were collected through a print and online campaign that appeared in The New York Times and on NYTimes.com.  Award winners are determined by a panel of nurse professionals and by The New York Times.
