SMEH Wins Modern Healthcare Spirit of Excellence Award

Sts. Mary & Elizabeth Hospital (SMEH) is one of the five winners of the 17th annual Spirit of Excellence Award, announced yesterday by Modern Healthcare magazine. The awards are also co-sponsored by Sodexo Health Care Services.  SMEH won in the category of “C.A.R.E.S. (Compassion, Accountability, Respect, Enthusiasm and Service), which recognized their extraordinary service during the flooding that closed the hospital for 10 days this past August.

In the article released by Modern Healthcare, the C.A.R.E.S. category judge William Roche, clinical director at St. Joseph’s Children’s Hospital in Paterson, N.J. was quoted as saying he was impressed by the staff’s attitude.  He went on to say, “Each of the team members forgot about their job description and began to solidify the concept of team and shared responsibility.”

“I am so proud of the SMEH team for their great work and dedication,” said Tom Gessel, President/CEO SMEH.  “It is because of this team that the disaster was handled with such calmness, and it is this type work that we are being recognized for today.  The entire SMEH team held true the Sister’s mission of serving the community.”

Each of the five winners will receive a cash prize of $5,000.
